WORLDLY FLAIR
Jillian Choi brings her global perspective to Design Miami/.
1 What does your new role as director of global exhibitions for Design Miami/ (designmiami.com) entail? As such, I am the primary liaison with our gallery, Curio and studio designer partners. I work closely with Aric Chen, the curatorial director, to curate the fair and virtual exhibitions programming. I bring a global perspective to the team, having led Collective Design as fair director for five editions and, in 2019, at Choi & Friends, where I advised clients on strategy, programming and sales with a focus on Asia.
2 What can we expect from the upcoming fairs in Switzerland and Miami? We’re looking forward to bringing together the best of historic and contemporary collectible design and seeing all of our friends and colleagues in person again. Both shows will also be completely viewable and available for purchase online, so anyone around the world can experience Basel and Miami from wherever they may be.
3 Where are you in the planning process? We are wrapping up the Edition gallery selections of Design Miami/ in Basel, which will be held in September this year, versus our typical June timing. We have several new initiatives that we are working on, including a new digital platform that we launched in 2020, which provides access to online collections of limited-edition furniture, lighting and objets d’art from a world-class roster of galleries and partners 365 days a year. It’s a labor of love that we are continuously expanding upon.
4 What inspires you? I am constantly inspired by people creating despite the odds, whether in design, art, film or television, especially BIPOC voices. Being new to Miami, I’ve found inspiration in the nature here; it’s been a constant source of renewal in difficult times. And last but most certainly not least, I’ve been endlessly inspired by the small but strong team of women at Design Miami/.
5 What do you see for the future of the design world in our new climate? The silver lining to the last year is that we’ve all had to fast-track the future a bit. Design Miami/ has continually looked for ways to evolve our platform to meet the needs of an ever-evolving industry, and will continue to do so. We have many exciting things on the horizon!
