5 Ways to Paddle Board Your Way Into Summer

BY Rebecca Wallwork | May 11, 2018 | Feature Features

It's all about the core—and the views! Into paddle boarding? Here are five ways to get your fix.
Paddletopia is a two-day event for paddle boarding enthusiasts.

A Paddle Party
Head to the 96th Street waterfront park in Surfside this weekend to celebrate the area’s first-ever Paddletopia, a two-day celebration of paddle boarding and the fit, fab life that goes with it. Jump onto a complimentary paddle board (or into a kayak) at the pop-up dock, explore the Intracoastal and refuel with free smoothie and juice samples, veggie ice cream and other healthy snacks. Fitness classes and kids’ activities are also on the agenda. May 19-20, 10AM–2PM, 9580 Bay Drive, Surfside

Neon Nights
Paddling in the sun is undoubtedly fun, but taking a spin on the bay at night adds a “so Miami” twist to the experience. Miami Beach Paddle Board, located in Sunset Harbour, offers nightly Paddleboard Sunset Glow Tours, with paddle boards equipped with LED lights. A guide will accompany you as you paddle, and the lights will illuminate five feet under water and 15 feet around your board. Nightly, 7PM, $65 per person or $90 for two, 1416 18th St., Miami Beach, 786.718.7537

Strike a Pose
Challenge your balance as you enjoy the healing support of the water with a paddle board yoga class. Founded by yoga teacher Christelle Chopard, Yoga-Water offers private and group SUP yoga classes in Key Biscayne, Coconut Grove and in Biscayne Bay in Miami Beach. The 90-minute classes begin with an intro to paddle boarding and a yoga warm-up on the beach. Then it’s time to take your asanas onto the board and into the ocean. Poses are adapted to experience and confidence. By appointment, $100 per person for two to four participants or $150 for a private class, locations vary, 786.301.7324

Moon Over Miami
What could be more Magic City magical than paddling beneath a full moon? The Virginia Key Outdoor Center is a great spot for paddle board, kayak and canoe adventures and the place to be for monthly Full Moon Kayak and Paddle Board Tours. These group paddles let you glide beneath the stars and city lights, and are suitable for beginners. VKOC offers equipment rentals; if you bring your own, lights are required. Après-paddle grilling is welcome. May 29-31, 7:30–9:30PM, $45 per person or $15 if you bring your own board, 3801 Rickenbacker Causeway, Miami, 786.224.4777

School Yourself
New to SUP and want to master the art before diving into a special event? A Stand Up Paddle Clinic at The Standard Spa will get you in the game. Mike Hirooka will teach you all the basics to get you standing and paddling in no time. The clinic fee includes a day pass to the spa for post-paddle recovery. May 26, 11AM–12PM, $150, 40 Island Ave., Miami Beach, 305.704.3945
