Alfa Romeo puts the competition on notice with its new plug-in hybrid 2023 Tonale crossover.
Alfa Romeo’s new 2023 Tonale is about to change everything you ever thought about the Italian sports-car maker. The new Tonale crossover is available with either a turbocharged gasoline engine or a plug-in hybrid powertrain that provides up to 30 miles of all-electric range. For most drivers’ daily commute, the Tonale’s pure-electric range should keep the gasoline engine off, making those weekly trips to the pump a thing of the past. The Tonale is a standout in its segment with its fresh Italian styling and invigorating driving experience. While Alfa Romeo has yet to release official pricing for the vehicle, we expect it to start at under $40,000 when it arrives stateside during the first quarter of 2023. Head to your Alfa Romeo dealer now, though, to get on the list so your Tonale can be one of the first off the boat.
A DISTINCTIVE EXTERIOR The Tonale is an Alfa through and through. The passion of its Italian soul comes alive in the Tonale’s expressive shape, highlighted by the unmistakable Alfa Romeo “Trilobo,” which is framed by those slim 3 3 headlights, inspired by Alfa’s various concept cars including the famous SZ.
UNIQUE INTERIOR ELEMENTS Signature Alfa Romeo interior design elements include the two outer “turbine” shaped vents that feature diamond textured air control knobs. Also of note is the Tonale’s available multicolored backlit dashboard, the background of which changes color when activated.
GOING WIRELESS Not only does the Tonale offer wireless charging, but it also offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, making it easier than ever to stay connected and charged while on the go. You can even use Amazon’s Alexa to communicate with the Tonale, asking Alexa to play music and podcasts and even add things to your to-do list, among many other possibilities.
ITALIAN HERITAGE Small touches make the Tonale a standout in its class. Notice the il Tricolore Italian green, white and red flag on the mirrors. You can also find another Italian flag inside, located just below the gear shifter.
WHEEL POWER The latest iteration of Alfa Romeo’s signature Teledial wheels is the result of an evolution that began in the 1960s with Alfa’s iconic 33 Stradale. The newest version of the iconic “telephone dial” wheels emphasizes lightness and brake cooling while also enhancing the Tonale’s signature profile.
ELECTRIC OR GAS? Both, please. The plug-in hybrid Tonale joins a 1.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine driving the front wheels with a 90-kilowatt electric motor driving the rear wheels. The combined output of the two motors is 272 horsepower, good for a zero-to-60 mph sprint of just six seconds. The Tonale’s 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery promises a 30-mile range of pure electric driving, which should take just two and a half hours to charge using a Level 2 charger.
