Curatorial newcomer Andrew Reed (andrewreedgallery.com) curated three celebrated “pop-up” exhibitions in his hometown Miami this past year. In September, Reed will open his first permanent space, Andrew Reed Gallery (abrcontemporary.com), in the heart of Allapattah. Immersed in contemporary art from an early age, Reed’s mother, Stefanie Block Reed, has led VIP relations for Art Basel Miami Beach since the fair’s inception, and his late father, Evan Reed, was an active arts supporter. After completing a master’s degree at The Courtauld Institute of Art in London in 2018, Reed returns to Miami from New York with wide-reaching creative knowledge. Miami magazine talks to Andrew Reed about his experiences and future gallery.
What motivated you to return to Miami?
I returned to Miami to collaborate with a friend Sophia Kardonski at her Little River project space, The Love You Gallery. Since then, I’ve curated two shows at a temporary Miami Beach location under the banner ABR Contemporary.
What do your unique offerings do your exhibitions offer visitors?
I have worked in New York at Sotheby’s, David Zwirner- and David Kordansky Gallery. I have been fortunate to live elsewhere within America and abroad, traveling extensively to museums, art fairs, and exhibitions. I incorporated these experiences into my Miami programming ethos. My presentations focus on national and international emerging, midcareer, and established artists and represent diverse media—exhibiting painting, drawing, collage, photography, and sculpture.
What is your new gallery focus, and where can we visit you?
The “pop-ups” were large-scale group shows, and I saw which artists I worked well with and who I felt able to champion within a permanent space. Now, my scheduling will shift to predominantly solo- and two-person shows and still bridge generations—I believe exhibiting emerging artists in dialogue with established names recontextualizes both. The Andrew Reed Gallery will be in Allapattah. The Rubell Museum and Mindy Solomon Gallery reside there; Marquez Art Projects and KDR305, helmed by a fellow Miamian, are opening, so Allapattah is a nucleus of cultural happening and a natural fit.
What is in store for 2023 Art Basel Miami Beach Week?
A solo show by Kate Bickmore, a London-based artist originally from upstate New York. Kate paints beautifully vivid compositions of flora for which she does extensive field research. Kate’s artworks show intense appreciation for our natural world and speak to her experience as a queer woman. Pencil in Monday, December 4, for the opening reception!
