Chances are you know Ian Grocher, better known as DJ Irie, as the official DJ for the Miami HEAT. Aside from his contagious enthusiasm and energy, the internationally acclaimed DJ is also a philanthropic entrepreneur, creating the Irie Foundation (iriefoundation.org) in 2011.
Stemming from a desire to address the disparity in opportunities and experiences for Miami’s underserved youth, Irie is working to bridge this gap for young individuals in need.
In preparation for the 17th Irie Weekend (irieweekend.com), which will introduce two new events, we chat with the philanthropist about the upcoming weekend and what he hopes the foundation’s future looks like. October 5-7, to purchase tickets visit irieweekend.com
What makes the upcoming Irie Weekend different from the years in the past?
This year, we’re introducing a fresh addition to the lineup: the inaugural “Game, Set, Give” Tennis Pro-Am event. This exciting addition complements our signature BIG Golf Classic, offering an extra dimension of sportsmanship and competition.

What are you most excited about?
I started playing tennis in April 2022, and I’ve developed a true passion for the sport—it’s become a daily activity for me. With that in mind, I’m thrilled about our new Game, Set, Give Tennis Pro-Am event. Even more exciting is that I’m competing in the tournament.
Out of the past 16 iterations of the event, what are you most proud of?
Among the many achievements, the one that resonates with me is our endurance. Reaching year 17 is a significant milestone and a testament to my team’s remarkable skills and unwavering dedication. Their invaluable contributions have been instrumental in making this journey possible.
What inspired the Gather and Give Dinner Party?
We used to organize extravagant formal galas, but since the pandemic, we decided to shift to a more intimate dinner party format, focusing on a program that provides clear avenues for our guests to support the beneficiaries of the Irie Foundation programs.
How have you seen the event grow over the years?
From its modest origins as a golf tournament followed by an afterparty, Irie Weekend has undergone remarkable growth over the years. Today, it boasts a lineup of five events spanning three days. The development has been substantial, welcoming thousands of guests and generating millions of dollars to support our beneficiaries.
What do you hope the future of the foundation looks like?
Looking ahead, my aspiration for the Irie Foundation is to extend the impact of our programs further, ensuring they reach an even more significant number of underserved youth in need.
