When she couldn’t find a retailer to suit her specific homeware needs, Federika Longinotti Buitoni created her own.

They say necessity is the mother of invention. Said proverb was the impetus for Collecto (collectoworld.com), an online retailer founded by Miami resident Federika Longinotti Buitoni that brings together some of the design world’s most interesting and forward-thinking brands in one place.

“The idea for Collecto was born when I was putting together my wedding registry and started looking for distinctive brands and objects that no one else had to decorate my home,” says Longinotti Buitoni, a Moda Operandi alum. “After many hours of research, I couldn’t find a platform that offered the curation I was looking for. So I launched Collecto as a wedding registry and shortly after expanded into e-commerce as we saw interest from clients who were looking to revamp their homes.”

Collecto’s inventory nods heavily to tabletop with a large selection of handpainted plates, colorful Murano glasses, artistic flatware and handembroidered linens from brands such as Stories of Italy, Los Encajeros, Saint-Louis, Laboratorio Paravicini, Lobmeyr and Ayres Estudio. Additional finds include palm tree-shaped candlesticks by Les Ottomans, textural vases by Elyse Graham, bowls by Paola C. and candy dishes by Purho.

“Quality is incredibly important,” says Longinotti Buitoni regarding her curating approach. “The aesthetics are the initial filler, and the beauty and design of a brand’s products are what draws us to them.”
