The inside jokes you share with your friends make life worth living, but when you’re as famous as Harry Styles and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele, your inside jokes might mess around and become the bedrock of something totally global—like a new collection from Gucci, perhaps.
With Gucci’s HA HA HA collection, we’re all let in on the joke. Turns out Styles and Michele have been friends for years, and they’ve always ended their texts to each other with a simple and silly “hahaha.”
Now, that mantra and laugh-together spirit is translated into a fresh lineup of looks that saw Styles and Michele team up in the design studio. It’s also a perfect acronym for the friends—Harry and Alessandro, or H.A.
“The idea of working together came to me one day while we were talking on the phone,” Michele says. “I proposed creating a ‘dream wardrobe’ with him, starting from those small oddities that come together in childlike visions. We ended up with a mix of aesthetics from 1970s pop and bohemian, to the revision of the image of the gentleman in an overturned memory of men’s tailoring.”
HA HA HA features jackets, coats, pants, shirts and accessories that reinvent the classic English gentleman, honing in on Style’s signature ability to play with a blend of masculine strength and feminine silhouettes.
There’s a focus on classic tailoring to bring elegance back to the manly form, while double-breasted coats, mother-of-pearl buttons, velvet and treated denim bring layers of texture and cultural sophistication to the pieces.
Bold prints, pajamas and bowling shirts, lined coats with hoods, and playful frog fasteners leave plenty of room for childlike fancy and innocence, because if there’s one thing Styles is known for, it’s having fun.
“Harry has an incredible sense of fashion,” Michele says. “Observing his ability to combine items of clothing in a way that is out of the ordinary compared to the required standards of taste and common sense and the homogenization of appearance, I came to understand that the styling of a look is a generator of differences and of powers, as are his reactions to the designs I have created for him, which he has always made his own; these reactions restore me with a rush of freedom every time.”
