Renowned collectors Jorge M. and Darlene Pérez make a transformative donation to Tate, unveiling Joan Mitchell’s striking triptych Iva alongside a multimillion-dollar endowment. This historic gift not only enriches Tate’s collection but also ensures greater accessibility to modern masterpieces and underrepresented voices in the art world.
On April 3, Tate unveiled a landmark gift from esteemed collectors and philanthropists Jorge M. and Darlene Pérez, whose generosity brings a major Joan Mitchell masterpiece into public view. The six-meter triptych, Iva (1973), now displayed at Tate Modern, invites visitors into a dialogue between two titans of modern art, positioned near Mark Rothko’s Seagram Murals. With Mitchell’s major works increasingly beyond the reach of public institutions, this donation transforms Tate’s holdings and ensures Iva—named after the artist’s beloved German Shepherd—remains accessible to inspire generations.
"This gift is one of the most important Tate has received," said Maria Balshaw, Director of Tate. "To place such a significant and valuable work in public hands is an act of incredible generosity." In addition to Iva, the Pérez family’s multimillion-dollar endowment will fund curatorial research into African and Latin American art, reinforcing Tate’s commitment to expanding the global art canon. Their gift also includes a selection of works from leading African and African diaspora artists, further strengthening the museum’s international collection.
"Art is the heartbeat of every great city," said Jorge M. Pérez. "We are honored to contribute to Tate’s mission and look forward to seeing how this gift inspires creativity and connection." Darlene Pérez added, "We’ve long admired Joan Mitchell’s work and are thrilled to share Iva with the world, ensuring greater visibility for women artists." With this transformative act of philanthropy, the Pérez family continues to shape the cultural landscape, ensuring that extraordinary art remains within reach of all who seek inspiration.
