Maestro Dobel just launched the first of its three limited edition Maestro Dobel 50 bottles in collaboration with Onora.
With less than 200 bottles of it produced, the exclusive bottle makes for a coveted item for any serious tequila lover. But further inspection of Maestro Dobel 50 proves the bottle is also a can’t-miss piece of art.
Onora is well-known for their work with artisans to revive traditional craft techniques. To take on this project, the Mexico City-based design studio tapped third-generation artisan Pablo Pérez Martínez to reimagine the extra añejo cristalino tequila’s bottle stopper.
“At Onora, we find continued inspiration and possibility in the passage of time,” said Maggie Galton and Maria Eladia Hagerman, founders of Onora. “Through this collaboration, we hope to honor legacy stories and traditional crafts by giving them a brand new life, just as Maestro Dobel does in the creation of its tequilas.”
Approaching a new, innovative canvas with long-held artisan traditions, Martínez painted the bottle stoppers in the style of Amate— a Mexican folk-art craft used on bark paper that dates back to the 1950s. Examination of the stopper reveals an illustrative take on the production cycle of the agave plant to hone in on the soul of Maestro Dobel’s craft.
As for the tequila itself, Maestro Dobel 50 is a smooth, complex extra añejo cristalino tequila made by founder Juan Dobel, who used a technique that combined contemporary methods and family secrets. The process includes resting the extra añejo tequilas in Eastern European and American oak barrels and then bringing them together for a blend that results in notes of fig, date, quince, pineapple and pumpkin, followed by hints of cinnamon, vanilla and clove.
Born in Jalisco, Mexico in 2003, Maestro Dobel approaches its 20-year anniversary as an industry standout, namely thanks to the beloved Dobel Diamante. The tequila company made its way to the U.S. in 2009, bringing with it 11 generations of tequila mastery.
Maestro Dobel 50 Onoria is available at select retailers nationwide for $250.
