Magnificent Seven

| February 22, 2012 | Parties

We’re nothing if not prolific here at Miami—especially when it comes to celebrating the city’s biggest events. That’s why we co-hosted seven of Basel week’s multitude of celebrations—three more and we would have been on par with the art fair’s 10th anniversary. (Maybe next time.) From Miami to Wynwood, the celebrations were as varied as the Basel crowds. There was the Pulse art fair VIP reception, where everyone from W owner David Edelstein to music mogul Pharrell Williams made an appearance... At the Locust Projects reception for the exhibition of artist Ruben Ochoa, the question of the evening was how he managed to create the cement and steel sculptures protruding from the floor of the gallery space and whether anyone could buy them. (We never got an answer.) The Reloaded Party at Baxter/Internum was one for the books as DJ Roxx and endless cocktails kept guests in great spirits late into the evening (long after all other area parties had come to an end)... Much more subdued was the Natives exhibition reception at Essex House, which featured artworks inspired by the hotel’s lobby mural... At the Scope art fair VIP preview, attendees lined up by the dozens for a session with The Amazing Ultran, a fortune-teller inside a carnival-style booth. Was he art? Entertainment? Nobody seemed to care... The Haiti Art Expo was a runaway success on its second year, thanks much in part to the involvement of Michael Capponi and a stellar exhibition curated by Michele Frisch and Galerie Marassa... Closing the week was Miami’s very own December issue release party at Baltus, where magazine principals and showroom owner Henry Sanchez welcomed hundreds of guests to preview the volume and peruse the showroom’s new furniture collections. More of the same is just nine months away. Photography by Brett Hufziger and World Red Eye
