Miami City Ballet’s 2024/2025 season reaches its crescendo with dazzling productions, each embodying the company’s legacy of artistic brilliance and innovation. As the curtain falls on Winter Mix in West Palm Beach this weekend, anticipation builds for the arrival of Spring Mix and the world premiere of Carmen, two performances that will define the season’s grand finale. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez, these final offerings not only celebrate the vitality of dance but also mark the conclusion of an era as Lopez prepares to step down at the end of the season.
Spring Mix, running March 28–April 13, promises an electrifying repertoire that seamlessly bridges classical technique and modern expression. The program features two company premieres—Alexei Ratmansky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, a mesmerizing interpretation of Mussorgsky’s piano suite, and José Limón’s Chaconne, a deeply personal work set to Bach’s violin masterpiece. George Balanchine’s Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux offers a dazzling display of technical prowess, while Jerome Robbins’s Glass Pieces pulses with the hypnotic rhythms of Philip Glass, embodying the relentless energy of contemporary urban life. Together, these works create a program as exhilarating as it is evocative, showcasing the full breadth of Miami City Ballet’s artistic range.
Bringing the season to a breathtaking close, the world premiere of Carmen debuts April 25–May 4, a bold new interpretation by renowned choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa. Known for her striking visual storytelling, Lopez Ochoa reimagines Bizet’s timeless opera through a contemporary lens, infusing the production with passion, tension, and a fresh score by Colombian-born composer Juan Pablo Acosta. This new Carmen embraces the sensuality and intrigue of the original while introducing a dynamic Latinx influence, ensuring a production that is as innovative as it is dramatic. It is a fitting final act to Lopez’s remarkable tenure, encapsulating her commitment to daring, transformative artistry.
