Although Michael’s Genuine Food & Drink won’t unveil its renovation until later this fall, regulars can rest assured proprietor Michael Schwartz will have all his bases covered. In summer, he appointed Ray Sholes as the restaurant’s head sommelier. We dialed him up for some grape chat...
What do you have planned for Michael’s wine list?
I want it to be fun and approachable while pursuing a rotating focus, including region, variety, style, etc.
Do you plan to work with new brands?
I do believe in working with amazing brands that are underrepresented. We already carry La Fête Rosé, which is geared toward multicultural consumers and does amazing. I am looking to keep doing that and hope to work with Aslina, Okapi, Bodkin, J. Moss, Theopolis and Longevity.
Are you excited to join Michael’s at this important time for the restaurant?
I’m both excited and nervous. I believe the enhancements will do exactly what Michael’s brought when it first opened, a new era of something special in Miami.
What’s the best wine for Miami, regardless of season?
Rosé. It comes in so many different shades and flavors, just like the people of Miami. 130 NE 40th St., Miami, 305.573.5550, michaelsgenuine.com
