Romantic Overture

| May 2, 2013 | Parties

Part of the fun of attending the New World Symphony Gala is anticipating how they will incorporate each year’s theme into every corner of the event. This season’s celebration was all about West Side Story—and, more specifically, the romance between the musical’s two doomed lovers, Tony and Maria. The evening began with a multimedia concert highlighting excerpts from the movie accompanied by the vocal stylings of Jessica Rivera and Dimitri Pittas. A special tribute to Artistic Director Michael Tilson Thomas looked back at the man’s amazing career (12 Grammys and counting) as well as his accomplishments with the company. Following the performance, guests like Sarah Arison, Christian Slater and Brittany Lopez, Desmond Childs, and Gloria and Emilio Estefan moved to different areas of the building for dinner and yet more surprise musical interludes between appetizers and dessert. Once the plates were cleared, the party moved to the Center’s Concert Hall, where an additional 200 late-night guests joined patrons for the after-party portion of the celebration. By evening’s end, the NWS had raised nearly $1.3 million for its various performance programs. Photography by Manny Hernandez
