During the COVID-19 pandemic, many restaurants were forced to shut down, and many iconic places that locals and tourists alike loved visiting disappeared. That was the case of Swensen's Grill & Ice Cream Parlor, which closed its doors after being open for 44 years serving the Coral Gables community. But the owners of the fresh The One on Sunset did not want to let go of the restaurant's beautiful history.

During that difficult period, the owners of Swensen's had few options for selling or giving up the lease. One interested client was looking to open a Starbucks. The other was The One on Sunset owners, who had been running a catering business and restaurant in Pinecrest. They felt a sense of loss in allowing such an iconic and beloved place in Coral Gables, which had been open since 1977, to become just another coffee chain. According to the owners of The One on Sunset, the former owners of Swensen's Grill & Ice Cream Parlor, Lous, and Nancy, trusted the family to be the new owners of the historic space.

"They were moved when we pledged to maintain the majority of the interior and certain original menu items," said the new owners.

Due to the unique circumstances, it has been a period of trial and error. We're working slowly but steadily with the hopes of providing long-term service to the community. Now it's time to introduce you to the One on Sunset and make our grand opening announcement.

When guests arrive at the restaurant, they may see familiar faces ordering their favorite ice cream. Families from previous generations who used to come with their parents now bring their children to enjoy the nostalgic new take. The familial hospitality will make them feel warm and welcomed.

The restaurant also has specials and events each week that guests will not want to miss: Happy Hour is from Tuesday to Thursday from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm. Comedy Nights every Thursday and Saturday from 9:00 pm onwards, and many more. To explore the menu, click here.
