In 2023, director-producer Judd Apatow made a smash outside the box office by securing $2 million above the asking price of a home he had for sale. In return, he and actress and wife Leslie Mann earned a $9 million profit on their Brentwood property.
And this didn’t even put the duo in the top five of celebrity earners in real estate profits. The home—which spreads over 10,000 square feet and includes a sprawling pool, lush lawns and a gated motor court—landed them in the No. 6 spot.
Just behind, Atlanta Hawks coach Quin Snyder raked in a $6.8 million profit for his Utah manse, while Rockstar energy drink founder Russ Weiner earned a $6.4 million profit. Coming in at the No. 8 spot, Oprah Winfrey let go of another Montecito property and welcomed a $7.4 million profit. Meanwhile, James Corden took the No. 7 spot thanks to the sale of his Brentwood property.
The top five celebrity real estate profiteers come from across the industry. Earning just a bit more than Apatow, Boston Red Sox alum David Ortiz landed at No. 5 and renowned broadcast journalist Diane Sawyer sold her Massachusettes vineyard to settle in the No.4 spot.
Zeroing in on the top three, Celine Dion secured an impressive triple the amount she initially paid for her regal Las Vegas mansion. Her profit sang to the sweet tune of $20.8 million. And just above her with a $31.3 million gain was Brad Pitt for the sale of his Los Feliz home.
Finally, the top celebrity real estate profit of 2023 is Mark Wahlberg. The actor-entrepreneur made a $46.7 million profit on the sale of his 30,500-square-foot Beverly Park home. He first purchased the land in 2009 for $8.25 million and tapped Richard Landry to build the compound. Spreading across just over six acres, it features amenities like a skate park and basketball court. Upon the decision to sell in 2022, Wahlberg listed the property for $87.5 million. He dropped the price by 37 percent and by February of this year, he made his whopping profit.
