Earlier this year, Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) unveiled the most radiant experience in the Magic City as the institution presented Yayoi Kusama’s LOVE IS CALLING. PAMM collaborated with the legendary artist to create an unparalleled multi-sensory environment, weaving together Kusama’s iconic motifs like infinite polka dots, vibrant colors and optical illusions with the spoken word in the form of a love poem authored by the visionary herself.
“Kusama is an artistic luminary whose lively, introspective works have enthralled viewers for over six decades. Her creative ingenuity truly knows no bounds, and we are honored to provide a platform for visitors to connect with the universal messages of love she so deftly conveys through her installations,” shares PAMM’s Jennifer Inacio.
Upon entering the exhibition, patrons find themselves immersed in Kusama’s resplendent world. Illuminated solely by colored lights emanating from inflatable, tentacle-like forms, the otherwise darkened, mirrored room instantly transports. As patrons weave through the all-encompassing installation, a recording of Kusama’s poetic ode, “Residing in a Castle of Shed Tears,” reverberates. Th e recitation, in the artist’s native Japanese, offers a poignant meditation on life, death and hope.
As Kusama’s first solo exhibition at PAMM, LOVE IS CALLING upholds the museum’s commitment to displaying inspirational 20th and 21st-century works by today’s most influential international artists. By presenting this momentous installation, PAMM aspires to foster genuine human connection for Miamians from all walks of life.
Yayoi Kusama’s LOVE IS CALLING is on view through Apr. 7, 2024, in PAMM’s Special Exhibition Galleries. 1103 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, @pamm, @yayoikusama
